Sorting through my mother's sewing box and trying to combine it with mine I came across these scissors.
They must have a purpose to have that rectangular cut out on their blades.
Any ideas?

I think they are bottonhole cutting scissors.
Do a search on google and see what you find, for instance

My suggestion is that they could be for cutting buttons of a garment without damaging the fabric below.

These scissors would allow you to start cutting material from the inside, without severing the edge of the material. I don't know if that's what they are for, but they could do that.
Celia's comment about them being 'buttonhole cutting' fits in with that.
