Yesterday I took Claire's advice (see her comment on the previous post) and headed off to Thwaite Common in search of the cuckoo.
My route takes me over a huge ploughed field and while I was taking this photo of the freshly harrowed ground. I thought I heard a cuckoo. To make sure I carried on and when I got to the common I could hear a cuckoo clearly in the distance. We stood still and listened for a while. I felt so releived that when I got home I started to make some silver cuckoo earings which I'll post up later in the week.
To celebrate here's a song we used to sing in primary school which might explain why I associate the cuckoo with the joyful arrival of summer.
Cuckoo, cuckoo you joyful rover
At last you're o'er the ocean blue
All hearts shall glisten, all ears shall listen
As you shout out cuckoo, cuckoo! (I made this line up as I can't remember it)
Yay! Now you made me think of that song from the Sound of Music :)

Just popped by to say that you were the runner up in my giveaway and as there were so many entries you will be receiving a little gift too. I wont be able to send it until a week today as off to Kent tomorrow, but can you please email your full name and address to me at the email address on my profile, for when I get back. Congratulations. Love Jenny x
PS we were only commenting the other day that we had not heard the cuckoo!

Saw you'd won Gina's giveaway, so I've popped over to have a look! Strangely enough I was thinking this a.m. I hadn't heard a cuckoo and, lo and behold, there was one in the distance this afternoon. So, I'm saved until the end of the year at least too!

I haven't heard one yet - I'm missing it! I need to get out there and try to listen out

Glad you heard the cuckoo at last! And you were right, the peacocks were calling at Thwaite House (or whatever it's called) tonight. At least they are penned in now, and not roosting on my studio roof like they were last year!
